Ok, so there are those guys and gals that need education in order to become a doctor or accountant. We actually need people with these skills. But is the world really crying out for more geologists or art historians? Do people really think they will walk out of college and into a job doing these things? I don't bloody think so! People are just getting themselves into a mountain of debt for not a whole load in return. They're just going to end up on the scrapheap anyway. Why waste time and money delaying the inevitable?
Maybe I'm just the way I am because education was a waste of time for me. But I look around me and see other folks and can't help but think that education was a waste of time for them too. There are so many people with really great qualifications but they are unemployed or doing crappy low paid jobs. I don't think they saw that coming when they signed up to go to college.
It's all so sad. I wish kids were warned about the realities of studying and getting a job. Don't simply study for a topic you enjoy. Study for a topic that will really get you a job. Getting a job doesn't even have to involve going to college. There are ways of building up practical skills and knowledge and you don't have to take out all those loans. You can work your way up in a company or you can set up your own business. It just takes a bit of imagination.
