OK, I'm not going to be making any wild claims or anything but there are certain things about being in debt that can be quite good for the environment. For instance you can save money by using vinegar as a cleaning agent in the home instead of these comparatively expensive detergents. Also, they are kinder to your health because they aren't so toxic.

If you still have a car and want to save money on fuel then you can do what is known as "hypermiling" where you are basically very careful about how you drive in order to save fuel. There are plenty of articles on the internet about the subject so you shouldn't have any problems finding tips. Hypermiling also means you are driving more safely too which has to be a great bonus.

Because you have less money, you aren't going out buying the latest gadget and whotnot. You should know that there are all sorts of toxic chemicals put out into the atmosphere because of manufacturing. It's worse in developing nations like India and China because the laws about such things aren't as tight as they are in other parts of the world. Things are slowly starting to change but not fast enough.
